I tend to do this, I read through the options, and make a rash army-choice decision based on something small. With 40k I chose Orks because I thought (and still do think) they were physiologically superior to every other choice (except Necrons...but back then they lacked free will - major turn off)
With Fantasy I chose Beastmen because of their aesthetics. I thought I was right in this, because I took issue with Ork aesthetics before and it forced me to move on. But, I have again learned from myself and realized that not only did the aesthetics/fluff of Chaos Space Marines appeal to me, but their Elite status did too. Playstyle matters, and horde armies are simply too daunting for me (especially because I always have ambitious conversion ideas for armies).
I was initially attracted to Chaos Dwarfs, because of my affinity for Chaos. However, I don't like that they don't choose Chaos, they're simply genetically-altered Chaos-Men.
Also, they more often look like this:
Perrin's Dwarf Throng Fluff update is pending, as well as initial images of my conversion ideas (because I'll be damned if my army ever looks normal!)
