"I was actually against Dwarfs before I was for them."

So I'm officially flip-flopping, and changing from Beastmen to Dwarfs.

I tend to do this, I read through the options, and make a rash army-choice decision based on something small.  With 40k I chose Orks because I thought (and still do think) they were physiologically superior to every other choice (except Necrons...but back then they lacked free will - major turn off)

With Fantasy I chose Beastmen because of their aesthetics.  I thought I was right in this, because I took issue with Ork aesthetics before and it forced me to move on.  But, I have again learned from myself and realized that not only did the aesthetics/fluff of Chaos Space Marines appeal to me, but their Elite status did too.  Playstyle matters, and horde armies are simply too daunting for me (especially because I always have ambitious conversion ideas for armies).

I was initially attracted to Chaos Dwarfs, because of my affinity for Chaos.  However, I don't like that they don't choose Chaos, they're simply genetically-altered Chaos-Men.

Also, they more often look like this:

Perrin's Dwarf Throng Fluff update is pending, as well as initial images of my conversion ideas (because I'll be damned if my army ever looks normal!)

"I've been all over the world and I've eaten everyfing that walks."

Eric again, back with some painted Ogres. I'm still working on my backstory, but I know that these brutes are going to have spent a lot of time in Araby and/or Cathay, so they're going to have dark skin tones. I'm trying out a new method of painting and taking a break from doing crazy amount of highlighting, which is also quite time-consuming. This time, I'm painting Snakebite Leather over a black undercoat and then sloshing on a bunch of Delvan Mud over that. I'm also using Delvan Mud wash over the Brazen Brass on weapons and ironfists. I'm using Badab Black wash over the boltgun metal areas. It will be a lot faster than my usual method.

skin tone of Snakebite Leather applied

Brazen Brass over Scorched Brown for the gut plates, with Brazen Brass and Boltgun Metal weapons and details. And several different hair colors.

the banner for the squad. the image on the banner is the World Maw; more details later as i think them up...

magnets in the Ogre body and banner arm

1/8" x 1/16" magnets

one magnet didn't hold, so i added another.

the magnetized banner bearer

My banner is that of the World Maw. I'm still working out the details of these Ogres' story, but they are mercenaries who have been all over the world and are convinced that the Great Maw is but a manifestation of the all-encompassing World Maw, which manifests in different ways for different races. The end of the world will be when the World Maw finally gets so hungry that it eats itself, or so these Ogres claim.

My banner bearer is also magnetized. As I stated in my previous post, I know that banner is going to snap off if I glue the arm in place permanently, so I magnetized it. This will also make for easier transport of the squad. The magnets I used are 1/8" x 1/16" round magnets from amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/104800001X. Shipping was timely and they work great! I used a drill bit and turned it by hand (didn't want to go too deep with an actual drill and the plastic is soft enough) to get the pockets for the magnets. The ones in the arm were sticking together before the glue dried, so I eventually put glue in the sockets, put the magnets on the Ogre body, and then glued the arm in place. By morning, the magnets were glue into the arm socket and no longer sticking together. Viola!

Next step for these guys is to give them their washes and get them some ground to stand on. I've already done the washes, but I don't have the pictures yet. More on that, and a more detailed story, next time.

"Undaunted were the companions, outnumbered a thousand to one, for the Lady was with them."

Kevin here, to give you a preview of the Bretonnian force that I will be building on the blog.

My force will be made up exclusively of mounted models, and no models at all with "The Peasant's Duty."  I envision them as a band of crusading knights abroad in the Old World, who pride themselves on moving quickly and do not suffer men-at-arms slowing their progress to do the will of the Lady.  As such, my painting style for the force will be to make the knights bright and colorful in their unique heraldry, but with a certain amount of grit and weathering to reflect their well-traveled lives.

My initial purchases will be a box of knights and a paladin/lord.  For the character, I intend to use the Green Knight model painted so that all the armor, barding, and clothing will appear to be gold.  This will become Lord Tancred, The Gilded Lion of Couronne.  The knight box will likely become a unit of 8 Knights Errant, as they will be somewhat easier to paint which will help me get my style down while being forgiving of mistakes.

From there, I will need to get a unit of Knights of the Realm and a BSB Paladin, both of which are compulsory in a Bret army.  Rounding out a 1000 point list will be a Damsel (Likely with Lore of Beasts for the buffing), another Knights Errant Unit, and a few Pegasus Knights.  Each unit of knights will be accompanied by a character, bringing each unit to 9 models, maximizing the benefits of the lance formation.  I'm considering painting an entire unit of Knights Errant in colors similar to Lord Tancred's, to be a personal bodyguard of his sons and nephews.  I have not decided if this would look really cool on the table, or if it would look too out of place with all the other very eclectic-colored units.

I'll post again once I get some models and start constructing and painting.

"Tear down their totems, befoul their colours! Kill the kings and burn the priests! Into the mud with them, break their skulls and eat their hearts!"

Time for me to introduce my army.

The Beastmen of Chaos.
My post will be more about the direction I will be taking my list, rather than a play-by-play of opening them up.  This is mostly because I have already opened and started painting my Gors:

Going with the grey because everyone and their mother does brown.  These guys are just barely above tabletop standard, mostly because I have experience with painting hordes and, well, fuck that.

Most of my suggestions for list building are coming from the Beastmen dedicated forums at The Herdstone.

My short term goal has been a Battalion (check), a Shaman (check), a Beastlord, and a Wargor Battle Standard Bearer.

After that, another Battalion and some support (Razorgor or Chariots) is in order.

Magic seems to be a strength of the Beastmen.  They're all about buffing themselves and weakening the enemy before sending waves of pretty tough men into combat.  Thus the Shaman requirement.  Also, I've seen as many as 4 shamans used in 2500 lists.

The Battalion is honestly one of the best values I've ever seen.  Everything in it (Gors, Ungors, and Bestigors) are used, and frequently, by Beastmen.  They make up the core of pretty much every Beastmen army.

The Beastlord has the highest leadership in the entire army, which is necessary considering leadership is essentially my biggest weakness.  Beastlords are featured in probably 85% of all Beastmen lists.

To make my battle standard bearer unique, I've purchased a Chaos Marauder standard.

It's quite big.

Can't wait to get more progress done. My Beastmen thirst for battle. They will not rest until your homes are ground beneath their hooves and your chewed flesh is rotting in their guts.

War has come to the Old World

Welcome to War in the Old World, a blog about a Warhammer Fantasy Battles escalation league from players who are just starting to learn the story and the rules. Posts will include any relevant information about list building, playing WHFB, modeling, painting, and background story of each army.

To start with, I have attached the various stages of assembly of my first unit of six Ogres.

the Ogres have arrived - some assembly required

bodies + shoes

heads attached

weapons and bitz attached - except for the banner bearer
The banner bearer doesn't have his banner attached yet. If I do attach it, I know its flimsiness and top-heaviness will cause it to snap. So I am going to use magnets in the arm and body to attach it. This way, the banner has less of a chance of breaking and the unit will fit into a carrying case more easily.
